“Rose” is a superb play for the beginning of the 21st century as it casts a retrospective view on some of the changes we have seen over the last 100 years. World events are filtered to us through the eyes of a Jewish woman with all the skill of a great storyteller and wonderful, self-deprecating and sardonic humor. It is an intensely personal and totally absorbing. "Rose" is a sharply drawn portrait of a Jewish woman who lived through some of the most tumultuous events of the past century. Her remarkable life begins in the Ukraine, follows her to the Warsaw ghetto, then to a ship called the “Exodus” then to the boardwalks of Atlantic City, and finally to a hotel in Miami Beach.
“Rose” was first performed on May 19, 1999 at the Royal National Theater in London. Rose was played by Olympia Dukakis. In 2000 “Rose” was produced in New York City by the Lincoln Center Theater with Dukakis in the title Role.
