Falmouth Art Market Opens Today

The annual showcase of local art and artists returns for its sixth year.

The Falmouth Art Market opens for its sixth year today, at . The annual celebration of all thing artistic and local is an eagerly anticipated entry on Falmouth's busy cultural calendar, and a sign that summer is here again.

One of the most eclectic assemblages of artistic endeavors around, the Art Market features painters, potters, etchers, fiber artists, glass blowers, photographers, jewelers, authors, poets, and more, all showing off their work. The pieces vary as widely in their sensibilities as in their forms, but they all share the unique flavor of Cape Cod.

The event's economic structure is innovative. Instead of paying an up-front fee to display their wares, artists contribute a portion of their sales to the Art Market, which allows the event to cover its operating costs.

That structure reflects the Art Market's mission. Begun by Marty Tulloch, longtime head of the Falmouth Arts Council, the event was designed to highlight the work of local artists and musicians, and provide them with a place to display and sell their pieces.

The market also strengthens Falmouth's reputation as an artistic center of the Cape, in the minds of both locals and visitors alike.

Each week, the market will showcase a particular artistic medium. Live music will also be performed all day, with local musicians entertaining market-goers with everything from jazz to folk to solo piano and flute to pirate chanteys.

The first week's music will come courtesy of Glenway Fripp on solo piano (from 2:30-5:00 p.m.), and The Larkins (5-7:30 p.m.), who specialize in folk, fiddle, and Cajun music.

The market opens at 2 p.m., and runs through sunset, every Tuesday through August 28th. For more information, visit the Art Market's Web site.
