Falmouth Police Shooting Suspect Arraigned From Hospital Bed

Malik Koval, 21, pleaded not guilty to shooting two Falmouth police officers Friday evening.

FALMOUTH, MA – A 21-year-old Falmouth man wounded in a shootout with police was arraigned from his hospital bed Tuesday morning. Malik Koval is accused of shooting Falmouth police officers Don DeMiranda and Ryan Moore in the East Falmouth neighborhood of Seacoast Shores Friday.

Koval has been charged with two counts of assault to murder, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license and disturbing the peace. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Koval was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

Police were called to Ashley Drive shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday for a reported disturbance and found Koval breaking bottles in the street, according to the DA.

Koval allegedly became agitated when confronted and ran back into the home. As two people came outside and tried to interfere with the officers' efforts to follow Koval, he allegedly fired at the officers from inside the house, hitting DeMiranda in the vest and shoulder and grazing Moore in the neck.

Police shot back and hit Koval several times.

Authorities also charged Kimberly Koval, 38, and Marcus Maseda, 18, with obstruction of justice, assault and battery on a police officer and interfering with the duties of a police officer. They were identified as the people who allegedly tried to block DeMiranda and Moore.
