Wind Turbine Blade failure -Lack of Maintenace
By far the biggest number of incidents found was due to blade failure. "Blade failure" can arise from a number of possible sources, and results in either whole blades or pieces of blade being thrown from the turbine.
According to Caithness Windfarm Information Forum in 2018 pieces of the blade are documented as traveling up to one mile. In Germany, blade pieces have gone through the roofs and walls of nearby buildings. This is why CWIF believe that there should be a minimum distance of at least 2km (more than one mile) between turbines and occupied housing or workplaces, in order to adequately address public safety and other issues including noise and shadow flicker.
The dark side of the wind industry shows that many media outlets have failed to report on the thousands of documented cases of serious accidents. These include numerous documented cases of turbines falling over, blades flying off, injuries to workers and the public.
Many of these accidents are blamed on maintenance issues which include worn bearings.
A privately owned Falmouth Vestas wind turbines had been shut down in the beginning of 2018 for a “normal and routine” maintenance issue. A bearing needed replacement and its location required the removal of the rotor blades. The repairs took seven weeks.
The Town of Falmouth owns two Vestas V-82 type 1.65 megawatt wind turbines the same exact make and model.
The town-owned wind turbines have a long history of keeping information secret from the public.
Do the two town-owned Vestas wind turbines need the same maintenance as the privately owned wind turbine and how much is the estimated repairs?
