JazzFest Continues at Historical Society

Learn about the Boston-Cape Cod connection, and stop by on your stroll.

The Falmouth Historical Society marks JazzFest today and tomorrow, with a lecture on a local musical connection scheduled for tonight, and a live performance Friday evening.

Tonight at 7, the First Congregational Church of Falmouth hosts the society's lecture, titled Let's Get Away From It All: The Boston to Cape Cod Jazz Pipeline. Boston author Richard Vacca will discuss his book, The Boston Jazz Chronicles, and share the colorful and surprising history of jazz in the region.

While jazz was an integral part of Boston nightlife for decades, many clubs shut down for the summer, and the musicians dispersed, seeking crowds wherever they could find them. Many came to the Cape, where they formed a sort of traveling Boston jazz scene, becoming a much-anticipated part of the season for residents and visitors alike.

Vacca will share stories about the many jazz stars who frequented both Boston and the Cape, including Sam Parkins, Teddi King, Dick Wetmore, Phil Edmunds, Bobby Hackett, and Dave McKenna. He'll also describe the scene at such Cape jazz clubs as Storyville, the Southward Inn, and the Columns.

On Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Historical Society's Museums on the Green will host one of the live performances arrayed throughout Falmouth for the annual Jazz Stroll. The Russ Wilcox Jazz Group will entertain strollers under the shelter of a tent.

The stroll begins at 6 p.m. at the Queen's Buyway, and winds its way leisurely through town, allowing participants to enjoy the performances of a wide range of musicians, who will be set up in stores, restaurants, and other strategic places along the route. Solo artists, duos, and big bands will perform music from every style and school, keeping the entertainment varied. Organizers stress that dancing is not only allowed, but encouraged.

Thursday's lecture is $4 for members of the society, $5 for nonmembers. Friday's stroll, and the society's featured performance, are free, and open to all. For more information on the lecture, call (508) 548-4857. For a full list of featured groups and performers, visit www.JazzFestFalmouth.org.
