Falmouth Wind Turbines Dubbed as A Failed Experiment with a ten-year liability in taxpayer money
By Elise Faulkner
Falmouth’s two turbines, Falmouth Wind 1 and Wind 2, are proving to be more of a burden than their intended purpose of providing alternative cheap power. The two turbines have become a health risk and have led to eleven lawsuits in the last ten years, which cost the taxpayers 300,000 dollars every six months.

The town’s assessment value the two turbines at between 5 to 10 million dollars a value considered by many as too erroneous. The turbines were designed in the late 1990s, and they are no longer manufactured. A select board requested 2.5 million-plus additional costs, in the long run, to take down the turbines and dispose of the blades. Furthermore, the previous owner, The Massachusetts state agency, failed to attract even one bid in a 2009 auction. The question in everybody’s mind is who would pay more than 5 million to buy the same turbines or any of its parts?
The loan and interest used to purchase Falmouth Wind two since the PRA loan agreement with ARRA were to pay up the entire loan and interest due if the turbine does not continue to produce power.

Hundreds of agencies, states, and councils around the world are taking down similar turbines and selling them as scrap. No one is willing to keep turbines with technology as old as thirty years.
The town shut down the turbines in 2017 due to their health risks and wanted to sell them in 2019.
Nine letters were received showing interest in purchasing the turbines. However, the Falmouth select board now opts to take them down and put them in storage, which will cost the taxpayer a further 2.5 million.
During the last decade, the town of Falmouth has continued to deny the extent of the problems related to the turbines but instead opted to throw taxpayer money at the problems.
