FALMOUTH, MA — Falmouth selectwoman Susan Moran, D, has defeated attorney James McMahon, R, and will be the nest state senator for the Plymouth and Barnstable District.

McMahon took the vote in four of the districts six towns: Plymouth, Bourne, Pembroke and Kingston. But Moran's win in Sandwich and her decisive victory in her hometown was enough to put her on top at 10,780 votes to 8,927.

Moran, D replaces Sen. Vinny deMacedo, R-Plymouth, who resigned to take a job at Bridgewater State University.

Her victory gives the Plymouth and Barnstable seat to Democrats for the first time since Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, didn't seek re-election in 2014. With the seat turning blue, there are now just four republicans in the Massachusetts State Senate.

The special election was originally scheduled for the end of March, but was delayed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Moran will have to be sworn-in to the seat in the midst of a pandemic, and acknowledged she'd have to hit the ground running if elected.

"I work hard as a lawyer, as a mediator and a real estate person and that’s just my regular tempo," Moran told Capecod.com. "I need to really rise to the occasion on this one because people in the Plymouth and Barnstable district really need strong representation quickly."

While McMahon was running, he called for a "safe reopening," which he said includes allowing restaurants with outdoor seating to operate. Gov. Charlie Baker has made restaurants a part of the second phase of reopening, which is at least three weeks away.

"By using common sense, we can safely reopen and help our local businesses survive this pandemic," McMahon said in a statement. "They are the lifeblood of our local economy. As the next state senator, I will be proactive on helping our district."
