Quintessence - New Photography From The Cape Photo Collective

Exhibit At The Falmouth Art Center

The Cape Photo Collective is exhibiting their photographs at the Sigel Gallery of the Falmouth Art Center during the month of March, 2017. The public is welcome to attend an opening reception on Friday, March 3, from 4 to 6 pm. Members of the Cape Photo Collective are: Julie DeMello, Chris Inoue, Jon Moore, Kathy Pett-Ryman, Irving Wagner, Nancy Walbek, Richard Hale, and Ann Worthington.

"Quintessence" is the theme of the exhibit a theme suggested by an article titled “On Photography” by Geoff Dyer in the The New York Times Magazine, May 30, 2016:

A photograph is not the same as the thing photographed. But sometimes photographs make you conscious of that thing in a way the thing itself never quite did. More precisely, they make you aware of things... Whether photographing a pepper or a toilet bowl, the great early 20th-century photographer Edward Weston repeated insistently that the camera was uniquely equipped “for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself.”

In this exhibition, we respond to the idea of quintessence. Our photographs strive to make a connection with the substance or essence of our subject matter, in Mr. Dyer’s words, ‘the thing photographed’.
