Shellfish Ban in Falmouth
Shellfish harvesting in Falmouth is closed until further notice after the bloom of a potentially toxic phytoplankton.
State officials on Tuesday banned shellfish harvesting on most of Cape Cod due to a "potentially deadly" phytoplankton. The decision was made after the bloom of Pseudo-Nitzschia, which can be deadly to humans.
The following communities are affected by the ban:
- Falmouth
- Mashpee
- Barnstable
- Yarmouth
- Dennis
- Harwich
- Chatham
- Orleans
- Aquinnah
- Chilmark
- West Tisbury
- Tisbury
- Oak Bluffs
- Edgartown
- Nantucket
The state Division of Marine Fisheries said it's conducting testing and could lift the ban in the coming days.

Pseudo-Nitzschia can poison humans. Symptoms include vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and incapacitating headaches followed by confusion, disorientation, permanent loss of short-term memory, and in severe cases, seizures and coma.
None of the closures affect the harvest of whelks or scallops "for purposes of extracting and selling or consuming the adductor muscle." Shellfish closure notices can be found on the DMF website.
