MASHPEE, MA — A presidential tweet has delayed a vote on legislation reaffirming the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe as trust land in Massachusetts. The U.S. House of Representative was expected to quickly vote on H.R. 312, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Reservation Act, before President Trump blasted the bill in a tweet Wednesday.

The House Committee on Natural Resources was expecting to fast-track the bill, which would require a super-majority of the House. Despite having several Republican sponsors, GOP support for the bill was questioned after it fell in the president's crosshairs.

"Republicans shouldn’t vote for H.R. 312, a special interest casino Bill, backed by Elizabeth (Pocahontas) Warren," President Trump tweeted. "It is unfair and doesn’t treat Native Americans equally!"

Some Democrats accused President Trump of interfering with the bill due to his relationship with the Schlapp family. Mercedes Schlapp, a strategic communications director for the White House, is married to Matt Schlapp, a lobbyist for a company representing Twin River Management group.

Twin River owns two casinos in Rhode Island and would be competing with a tribal casino.

Cedric Cromwell, chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Nation, issued the following statement Thursday:

Over the past 24 hours news accounts about our land protection legislation has been thrust into the national spotlight. I want to provide a brief message, simply to state our focus on the successful passage of HR312 remains as strong as ever.
While there are clear detractors who seek to derail our efforts for financial interests, we are driven by what is right and what is just. Our Elders set the example decades ago by standing strong in protection of the land and our aboriginal rights. We continue that legacy.
As further legislative developments occur, I will continue to provide updates. Please, continue the Prayers...moments like this I feel the power of our Ancestors more than ever. We believe...Mashpee above everything!

According to Politico, the House will take up H.R. 312 on Wednesday. It will need a simple majority, rather than a two-thirds vote, to pass.
