Woods Hole Museum Open For The Summer

Exhibits: Science Connection -- Woods Hole & Japan, plus Historic Cod Fishing

This summer the Woods Hole Historical Museum will present two unique exhibits in the Bradley House. Gallery One will feature an exhibit on Japan and its scientific connection with local Woods Hole scientists. The exhibit will highlight the careers of Edward Sylvester Morse, Patricia Morse, Ken Buesseler, and Katsuma Dan, and the 1975 visit of Emperor Hirohito to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biological Laboratory.

It is noteworthy that Highfield Hall is presenting a 60-year retrospective of modern Japanese prints this summer that will coincide with the Japanese spirit of our exhibit in Gallery One.

Gallery Two will feature an exhibit on commercial fishing on Cape Cod. Historic Cod Fishing will look at what it was like during the glory days of cod fishing more than 100 years ago when cod was king. There will be vintage photos, illustrations, charts, and films, along with old fishing gear, clothing, and nautical artifacts to see and touch. Plans include a talk by John Cumbler on June 28. He will discuss “Cod and the Cape” and how cod fishing has changed over the years.
