Wrong-Way OUI Narrowly Dodges Disaster: Police

A Rhode Island man driving the wrong way on Route 25 in Bourne almost struck a State Police cruiser, police said

BOURNE, MA — A Rhode Island man was arrested shortly after midnight Saturday for allegedly driving drunk in the wrong direction on Route 25, narrowly missing a State Police cruiser while he was at it.

State Police said they received a call about an "erratic" driver near the Bourne Rotary. The vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck, drove northbound over the Bourne Bridge onto Route 25 East, but he was heading west on the highway.

A trooper saw the vehicle coming in the high speed lane and positioned his cruiser in the middle travel lane. He attempted to alert the driver, but the truck continued past the cruiser, narrowly missing it.

The trooper then went to the westbound side of the highway and drove parallel to the truck. He then went back to the eastbound side and parked in front of the truck to protect oncoming traffic. The truck rolled into the front bumper of the cruiser, causing minor damage, but no injuries.

Police arrested the driver, Scott Koziol, 53, of Rumford, R.I., on charges of OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and marked lanes violation.
