Rolling Red Sox Enjoy Record-Setting Night

The Red Sox won their 11th straight, setting some records along the way.

It looks like the Red Sox will have a very good chance to clinch the American League East in New York.

Boston edged Tampa Bay, 3-2, in 10 innings on a whacky play that saw Dustin Pedroia dip, dodge, and dance his way past the catcher to score the winning run. But more important than the result is what it represents: an opportunity to clinch the division the next time they play.

The win puts playoff-bound Boston's magic number to clinch the AL East at 2, meaning any combination of two Toronto losses and Boston wins will seal the deal. The Sox start a three-game set at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night.

On Sunday, it was the pitching that took the team one step closer to the division crown. Eduardo Rodriguez struck out a career-best 13 in just 5 1/3 innings, including the last six in a row. Heath Hembree came on in relief to strike out all five batters he faced. The combined 11 strikeouts in a row set an MLB record.

Also a record for Boston was striking out 21 through nine innings. Joe Kelly, who got the win, struck out two more in the 10th for a 23-strikeout game.
