Framingham Police Warn Of Eversource Phone Scam

Police said the scam hit the area once before but has made its way back this spring.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — Be extra cautious of your phone calls as Framingham police said there is a phone scam hitting the area targeting Eversource customers. The scam has made its way through the area before but police are reminding residents to be cautious as it is back.

Police said scammers will call homes and claim to be Eversource and demand immediate payment. Police and Eversource have said that no utility providers will call and demand money, or threaten to shut down power.

Any information regarding unpaid bills will be mailed to homes directly. Police warned residents not to give out financial or personal information over the phone and if they come across a scam demanding money, to hang up the phone.

Eversource offered some tips to keep in mind as well:

  • Eversource representatives never demand instant payment over the phone, require the use of pre-paid debit cards or request customers meet at a payment center to make the payment.
  • Eversource never asks for personal financial or account information.
  • Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive a written notice that includes information on how to maintain their service.
  • Customers can always verify they are speaking with an Eversource representative by asking for some basic information about their account like the name on the account, the account address, and the exact past due balance.
  • Be aware that some sophisticated scammers can manipulate their caller ID to say the caller is with Eversource.
