City Seeking Applicants To Fill District 1 School Committee Seat
FRAMINGHAM – The City of Framingham is seeking a resident and registered voter to serve as the District 1 School Committee member through December 31, 2023.
The applicants must be a registered voter from District 1 (Precincts 1 & 2), when former School Committee member Beverly Hugo was elected in November of 2021. Hugo, the longest serving School Committee member resigned last month and moved to Wellesley.
Applications are due by Friday, August 4, 2023.
A joint meeting between the School Committee and the 11-member City Council will be called to appoint an individual to fill the rest of current term through December 31, 2023.
The individual who receives a majority of votes from the 11 City Councilors and the 8 elected School Committee members will be appointed to fill the vacant seat through December, 31, 2023.
Individuals may also pull nomination papers for the full 2-year seat from the City Clerk’s office through Friday, July 14. If elected, the individual would serve from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025.
Potential District 1 School Committee candidates must collect 50 signatures from registered voters in the new District 1 (Precincts 22, 23, & 24) and submit them by 12:30 p.m. on July 14 to be certified to be on the November ballot. At this time, no one has submitted papers to be on the ballot.
School Committee members duties include:
- To appoint a superintendent of the schools who shall be charged with the day-to-day administration of the school system, subject only to policy guidelines and directives adopted by the school committee and, upon the recommendation of the superintendent, to establish and appoint assistant or associate superintendents as provided in General Laws, chapter 71, section 59
- To make all reasonable rules and regulations for the management of the public school system and for conducting the business of the School Committee as may be considered necessary or desirable
- To adopt and to oversee the administration of an annual operating budget for the school department.
No member of the School Committee shall hold any school department position for which a salary is payable from the municipal treasury, except positions receiving a stipend.
For the appointed position through December 31, 2023, applicants must be a resident and registered voter from District 1 (*Precincts 1 and 2) in the City of Framingham, MA. The person filling the vacancy must be from the district that the resigned candidate was elected from. To verify that you are eligible, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 508-532-5521.
Members of the School Committee shall receive a stipend for their services. This position pays a stipend of $5000 per year. It will be prorated from the date of the Oath of Office through December 31, 2023.
