Framingham State Scores 4 Third Period Goals For 5-2 Victory Over Fitchburg

The Framingham State men’s ice hockey team scored the four goals in the 3rd period to propel them to 5-2 victory in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday night at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg.

In the opening period neither team was able to find the back of the net, with both goaltenders stopping multiple scoring opportunities at both ends. The Falcons had the best chance late in the period off the stick of junior forward Nat Rojas, but Rams sophomore goalie Alessio Muggli was able to make a sprawling save to keep the game scoreless.

The Green & Gold opened the scoring at the 4:09 mark, as sophomore forward Cameron Synder was able to tip in a shot by senior defenseman Craig Halpinto put the Falcons ahead 1-0. The visitors responded just a few minutes later however, as junior forward Ricky O’Connor sniped a rebound into the top left corner to tie the score at 1-1. Less than a minute later, the Falcons retook the lead as senior forward Sean Loebs was able to poke home a loose puck in the slot to give Fitchburg State a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission.

The Rams seized control of the contest in the third, with freshman forward Peter Mingus and classmate Zachary D’Errico scoring just 27 seconds apart to give the visitors their first lead of the contest at 3-2. Framingham State would add insurance with a goal by freshman forward Greg Stoya and an empty netter from senior defenseman Dylan Cosford, resulting in the 5-2 final.

In the contest, Fitchburg State held a 45 to 38 shot advantage while going 1 for 5 on the man advantage. In goal, Muggli impressed with a 43 save performance, while Ryan Wysocki stopped 33 shots in the setback.

Framingham State improves to 4-12-2 overall with the victory, and 3-8-1 in conference play.

Framingham State will travel to Westfield State on Thursday, with faceoff scheduled for 7:35 p.m. ​
