There are many parents in Framingham, who during the process of selecting an elementary school for their child, immediately rule out several fine elementary schools for the mere reason that these schools feed into the dilapidated Fuller Middle School.
That means that the student composition of our nine elementary schools; is being impacted by the terrible physical condition of the Fuller Middle School.
What does that say about our community? We have a school that is in such bad condition, parents will select a school for the most important years of their child’s education based on them not having to attend Fuller. This is common knowledge, yet the situation has persisted for two generations.
And think about the unsung heroes in our community who staff that building. They don’t receive additional compensation for having to do more with less, to provide our children with the best middle school experience they can. They also don’t get to matriculate to the high school after three years like the students do. There are many reasons we can consider our teachers heroes; excelling in while working in a dump should not be one of them.
After years of work by many community leaders, the state is throwing Framingham a one-time $39+ million dollar lifeline toward replacing that dilapidated facility—and giving us the opportunity to change our elementary feeder system.
All of our children matter. Each of them deserves a healthy and positive learning environment. We now have the chance to give them that. And this is our last chance to do so with the state paying a huge portion of the bill. Why wouldn’t we?
Next Tuesday, please vote YES FOR FULLER. We will all be better for it.
