Superintendent Invites First Lady To Visit Framingham High's Garden

Framingham Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott has invited Michelle Obama to visit the Framingham Public Schools and tour the high school's garden.

"Your initiatives to increase healthy eating for the children of America   are effectively manifested in our community and we wanted to share it with you
personally," wrote Scott in his October letter to the White House and the First Lady.

"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake," said the First Lady when she launched her Let's Move campaign in 2010. Let’s Move! is a program dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. The comprehensive program gives parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices and it encourages schools to provide healthier foods.

Scott is inviting the First Lady to witness first-hand the success of the Framingham Public Schools Food Services Department garden at Framingham High School.

"In our second year of operation, our school garden included 340 plum tomato
plants that yielded over 1,000 gallons of tomato sauce that will be consumed
by the students at the school," wrote Scott to Obama. "This year’s harvest also included 120 basil plants yielding 30 gallons of pesto that will be rolled into balls, frozen and then used throughout the year to enhance many dishes served at the school this year."

Scott writes that the "garden is an excellent example of student engagement as evidenced by the students who showed up on a Saturday morning to pull up plants and lay down compost in the garden."

"We would be honored to have you come and visit our garden and to see, first.
hand, how it has become an integral part of the high school experience for our
students here ín Framingham," wrote Scott. "We are proud of our garden, and We are grateful for your support in such efforts to bring students closer to making healthy decisions when it comes to food."

The White House has yet to respond to the Oct. 3 letter.
