When the Lexus struck the telephone pole, the pole broke off its base. The car ran over a metal post which grounded it, Police Chief Alan Gordon told Grafton Patch. The car was then draped with live electrical wires, causing a large fire.
“When the electric wires came into contact with the vehicle, the operator was [electrified],” Gordon said.

Witnesses at the scene called the crash “horrendous” and said that Maxwell was seen taking off metal items. He was pulled from the backseat of the car. Firefighters reportedly had trouble getting to the trapped man because the flames would reignite each time a rescue attempt was made.
Maxwell was taken to the hospital “priority one” with serious injuries. He is expected to survive.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Gordon praised Roberts and Roche, saying, “The firefighters saved his life and risked their own since the vehicle was on fire with the wires on it.”
