Embrace the Joy and Spirit of Music ~ Maeve Gilchrist, Solo Harpist
February 13 The Community House
Maeve Gilchrist, internationally known for her free use of improvisation in her music, will take The Community House stage for a solo performance on Saturday, February 13 at 7:30pm.
“I use improvisation in my music because it gives freedom, I use extended cords because it gives color and I use syncopation because it grooves! It’s every musician’s duty to try and evolve and create new sounds. The harp is a beautiful and deep instrument which hasn’t quite found the place it deserves in contemporary music.” ” Maeve Gilchrist, 2008 interview with the International Jazz Harp Foundation
A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Maeve grew up in a highly musical family, two of her aunts being professional Irish harp players. At seventeen, she arrived at Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. She is currently a Strings instructor at the college.

Maeve’s own style stretches her instrument to its harmonic limits. Through her journey in improvisation and her belief in a musician’s responsibility to evolve in their music, she encourages her students to find their own style as she has so successfully done. Imagination is the greatest gift and Maeve has been given the greatest gift.
Carol Littlefield McIntyre will be opening for Maeve Gilchrist. Carol has for over twenty years been performing on the North Shore for public concerts and private parties. She plays a variety of styles including classical, Celtic, popular and folk.
