New England Intercollegiate Band Festival Concert

Concord Band to be Featured at New England Intercollegiate Band Festival

Concord, Mass., March 20, 2011 - The Concord Band has been invited to be the featured guest community band to open the 29th Annual New England Intercollegiate Band Concert. The concert, presented by the New England College Band Association, will be held at Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at 7:00 PM in the A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel.

The New England Intercollegiate Band is a select honor band comprised of over 50 students from more than 20 colleges and universities throughout New England. The New England Intercollegiate Band will be performing music of Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, Persichetti, and Ives under the direction of guest conductor Malcolm W. Rowell Jr., Professor of Music Emeritus from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Under the direction of Professor Rowell, the Concord Band will perform "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. The remainder of the Concord Band's portion of the program, conducted by Music Director James O'Dell, will include Fruitlands Overture by Dr. William G. McManus, the Concord Band's Music Director Emeritus; Colours by Roger Cichy; and Con Sabor Español by Lewis J. Buckley.

Professor Malcolm W. Rowell, Jr. recently retired as Director of Bands and Professor of Music Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. In recognition of his professional work, Professor Rowell has received the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence and the A. Frank Martin Award, presented by Kappa Kappa Psi for his contributions to college bands. In March 1997, Professor Rowell was elected to the American Bandmasters Association, the most prestigious organization of its kind in the world. He frequently serves as guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer at state and regional festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

The Concord Band, founded in 1959, is one of the leading community concert bands in the United States. It is well known for its innovative programming and the exceptional quality of its commissioned pieces. It presents both formal and Pops concerts throughout the year.
