Performing New Lives: Prison Theatre
A national leader in the development of theatre programs in U.S. prisons will speak and read from his new book, Performing New Lives: Prison Theatre. The book features 14 prison theatre programs from across the country, including his own in southeastern Wisconsin.
Dr. Shailor is Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and director of the Program in Conflict Analysis & Resolution there. He facilitates "The Theatre of Empowerment" and "The Shakespeare Prison Project" at
prisons in southeastern Wisconsin. He is also a graduate of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, class of 1975.
Dr. Shailor will discuss theatre programs as "sanctuaries within prison walls--places
where it is safe(r) for prisoners to express themselves freely, and where they can take
risks (by allowing themselves to be vulnerable), build self-esteem (by creating something good and being recognized for doing so), learn to work productively with others (by showing and respecting leadership), learn empathy (by creating compassionate portrayals
of persons other than themselves), and expand their sense of moral imagination (by gaining a larger sense of culture and history)." He will provide stories from his own program, and from some of the others presented in his book.
