Bomb Squad Removes Hand Grenade From Hingham Retirement Community
Family of a 95-year-old military veteran found the grenade while helping clean out his apartment.

HINGHAM, MA — The State Police bomb squad had to be called after police said a 95-year-old military veteran's family found a hand grenade, while cleaning out his apartment at a retirement community.
On Monday around 4:05 p.m., police were called to Linden Ponds, a gated apartment complex for seniors after the man's family found the grenade. The man was moving to a different apartment unit.
“A family member moved the hand grenade and other items that were found with it such as possible live munitions, to a wooded area several hundred yards away from the building down an embankment,” Hingham police said in a statement.

Since the grenade was already moved away from the building, police said no one needed to be evacuated.
The State Police bomb squad were called and picked up the grenade and other items with it. It's not clear at this time if the grenade was live.

Hingham Police cautioned people, saying they should never pick up explosives.
"We recommend people not handle any suspected explosive items. They should leave them in place, leave the area, and call 911," the statement said.
