Coronavirus: Hingham Parks, Trails Accessibility Update

Several parks and trails in Hingham are closed or restricted due to social distancing guidelines amid the new coronavirus health emergency.

HINGHAM, MA — Access to many parks and trails in Hingham remains restricted due to the state's "stay-at-home" directive and to promote social distancing in the town during the new coronavirus health emergency. World's End remains closed with some restrictions also being extended at Wompatuck State Park.

While the Trustees of Reservations has reopened 75 properties across the state that are in remote areas and did not experience overcrowding prior to the coronavirus closures, the sites on the South Shore — including Whitney and Thayer Woods — will remain closed.

"The Trustees of Reservations are still looking into systems that may allow us to open these properties safely, but no timeline has been established," The Trustees announced. "None of the nearby Trustees properties on the South Shore will reopen with the exception of Holmes Field in Plymouth, which does not have trails."

"Now more than ever, we recognize that offering access to our special places provides respite, solace, fresh air, and a physical outlet during this unprecedented time in our world," said Trustees President & CEO Barbara Erickson. "At the same time, we know that it is so important that visitors follow the CDC social distancing guidelines for everyone's safety and that they stay close to home."

Hingham police has told residents not to park in the vicinity of the closed World's End property in recent weeks.

At Wompatuck State Park, the visitor center is closed to the public, meaning there are no public restroom facilities in the park. Mt. Blue Spring is also closed to the public.

The park's trails are still open from dusk until dawn for walking. Trash pickup has been suspended, so anyone using the park must adhere to a carry-in, carry-out policy, which includes all trash and dog waste.

Dogs must be leashed at all times. Those using the parks are invited to explore some "new to you" trails that might be less crowded as all users of the park are urged to exhibit social distancing principles.
