Deputy Fire Chief Named New Hingham Fire Chief
The selectmen didn't have to go far to find their new fire chief.

HINGHAM, MA — The Hingham Board of Selectmen didn’t have to look far to find their new fire chief. In fact, they didn’t need to look past the fire station.
Last week, the board voted to appoint Deputy Chief Stephen Murphy the new fire chief, effective March 1. He succeeds Chief Robert Olsson, who enters mandatory retirement on Feb. 28.
State law says that public safety officials must retire by the last day of the month they turn 65 years old.

Olsson told the board that Murphy was someone who always looks forward and has continued his education. He is currently enrolled in the National Fire Academy and is a teacher at the Massachusetts Fire Academy.
“He is the most qualified person to make the next step,” Olsson said. “I can tell you that he has all the knowledge that a fire chief should have. He has the experience and he understands the strategic vision necessary to be a fire chief.”
