Gap Remains in Proposed Hingham School Budget
Over $800,000 has been cut from the proposed budget.

HINGHAM, MA - The Hingham School Committee and Superintendent Dorothy Galo are close but not quite there when it comes to closing the budget gap for the proposed 2016-17 school year budget.
Galo told the school committee this week that the preliminary budget of $48.86 million has been decreased by over $807,000 and now stands at $47.8 million. The gap to get to the $47.6 million budget voted by the advisory committee and selectmen remains over $400,000
Proposal cut and reductions from the budget include a PE teacher, the math tutors’ hours from 25 to 20, an elementary technology assistant’s hours from seven a day to five, a middle school counselor, a maintenance person, the transition room, math tutors, a bid for a new bus and a driver, and a shared technology specialist.

The only unknown that remains, according to Galo, is the enrollment.
One suggestion thrown around was taking textbooks needed for a reading program out of the operating budget and into the capital expense budget, removing about $233,000 from the budget.
