Hingham Harbormaster Warns Boaters to Stay Away from the Waters
As Hurricane Irene makes its way to Hingham, the Harbormaster advises all boaters to stay out of the water.
Hingham Harbormaster Kenneth R. Corson III is warning Hingham boaters to stay away from the water this weekend as Hurrican Irene approaches.
Corson said boaters must begin preparations to protect vessels immediately and should have boat preparations completed by the end of the day Friday.
“Your boat is safest out of the water and you should strongly consider this option,” hes said. “If you choose to keep your boat in the water it must be well equipped to ride out the storm alone without your assistance.”

Corson recommend Hingham residents to put their boats on its trailer, bring it home, or consider a short haul at a nearby marina.
“Under no circumstances should you attempt to ride out the storm on your boat, Corson said. “If you need help we may not be able to provide assistance. During the height of the storm, you will not be able to gain access to your boat. “

The Harbormaster's Office is available to assist residents and their vessel as long as it is safe.
According to Corson, no vessels will be allowed to moor in the Worlds End Mooring Area from 8:00 a.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Tuesday or until the storm has passed. No boats are to be stored in the boat ramp or bathing beach parking lots. Any vessels left there will be removed at the owners expense.
If you choose to keep your boat in the water:
Make sure your boat's batteries are charged and all electrical equipment is off EXCEPT your bilge pump.
Make sure your bilge pump is working properly.
You should have two strong reliable mooring pennants with all friction points protected by chafing gear.
Remove your sails, canvas, antennas, cushions.
Lash down booms, wheels, tiller, and hatches.
Make the boat as water tight as possible
If moored in a slip make sure you have plenty of fenders and additional lines.
Secure all objects on deck or remove them from the vessel.
