Hingham High School To Celebrate America Recycles Day

Hingham High School students and teachers will participate in the fifth annual America Recycles Day  "Teach in" next Thursday.

Assistant Principal Rick Swanson said the  event is designed to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Professor Eric Olson, a noted scholar from Brandeis University will be a guest speaker at the event and will address students about climate change and renewable energy while Jon Belber and Janice McPhillips, education specialists at Holly Hill Farm will supervise the building of raised beds in one of the school’s interior courtyards.

At the full day "Teach In," HHS faculty members from every department will educate students about recycling and there will be more than 150 separate presentations throughout the school day.

Swanson said  science teachers will demonstrate the energy savings delivered by the school’s solar panels while a Spanish teacher will discuss environmentalism in Latin America and  Family and Consumer Sciences teacher will deliver a lesson on environmentally responsible cooking

"The ‘Teach In’ has become an important tradition here at HHS,” said Swanson, who is coordinating the event. “An event like this highlights the enormous power that students can have when they use their education to create positive change in the world. Just as with Earth Day, celebrated every April, America Recycles Day is a great opportunity for us to be more mindful of the ways our small actions can make a big difference. Moreover, the great participation rate of our faculty is a testament to the dedication of our teachers. Their willingness to do something extra – and to address one of the most urgent issues of our time – sets a powerful example for our students.”
