Hingham Hobart Street Fire Investigation Closed

The two-alarm fire destroyed the colonial-style home, which was built in 1775. The home was last valued at a little over $611,000.

HINGHAM, MA — Police closed the investigation into the Sept. 1 fire at a vacant house on Hobart Street. Police told the Patriot Ledger they believed the fire was arson, but the official cause after closing the investigation is listed as "suspicious."

“There was a strong suspicion that this was an arson type of fire, but police weren’t able to find any witnesses to corroborate that," Hingham Fire Chief Steve Murphy told the Patriot Ledger. “We did canvass neighbors and post on social media looking for any witnesses, but police didn’t get enough evidence to deem the fire an arson.”

On the night of Sept. 1.,firefighters battled the Hobart Street blaze. The street was closed by police from Main Street to Cross Street.

Murphy told the Patriot Ledger the owner is working on tearing down the house.

No injuries were reported.
