HINGHAM JEWELERS STORY

While today standing as a South Shore icon known for exemplary service, Hingham Jewelers had humble beginnings. Seven decades ago, Hingham Jewelers started on North Street with just $500 and Mike’s side interest in watch repair.

A growing customer base in the 1950s required a larger space for the store, which eventually settled on South Street. That’s where Stacey grew up in the family business, eventually joining full time after graduating from Babson College in 1985.

But as plans were made for the first generation to retire, a massive fire threatened the future of the business. Hingham Jewelers was one of more than a dozen businesses to burn to the ground in the January 16, 1988 fire that ravaged downtown Hingham.

After operating in the backroom of a neighboring business after the fire, the decision was eventually made to relocate to South Hingham.

It’s there, at 9 Whiting Street, that Dave officially joined the business. The new location allowed Hingham Jewelers to flourish as its community ties deepened, even in the face of several armed robberies.

After 16 years, Hingham Jewelers again required more space. After completely renovating a nearby building, and adding its now signature clock tower, Hingham Jewelers moved to 35 Whiting Street in 2004.

At its current location the business continues to service the South Shore in an ever changing retail landscape. It offers customers something the internet cannot: dependable, local service with a smile.
