Hingham Receives Almost $7,000 In Fire Safety Grants

The grants will be used to improve fire safety education for children and seniors in Hingham.

HINGHAM, MA —The fire department was awarded almost $7,000 between two state grants for fire safety education for children and seniors.

The grants are part of the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior S.A.F.E. programs. The Baker-Polito Administration awarded grants to 246 fire departments throughout the state.

Hingham's fire department received $4,354 under the S.A.F.E. grant. That money will be used to teach preschoolers, kindergartners, as well as third and fifth graders fire safety tips appropriate to their age, the Hingham Journal reported. The $2,600 grant for senior fire safety is expected to be used to replace smoke detectors in their homes.

“The program is a great example of state and local governments collaborating with teachers to provide fire safety education to young people,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in a press release.

The average number of children dying in fires annually has dropped by 74 percent since the S.A.F.E. Program began, Baker added.
