Hingham Schools Required to Check Students’ BMI

The state requires schools to check student's BMI, which is a "weight for height for age" index that can be a useful tool in early identification of possible health risk factors among youth and children.

The Hingham Public Schools will be collecting height and weight measurements for students in grade 1, 4, 7, and 10, as required by state law.

The results of the students’ height, weight and BMI (Body Mass Index)  measurements are strictly confidential and will be for school health records and mailed directly to parents.  Last year, the results were sent home in December.

According to the Department of Public Health,  BMI is a "weight for height for age" index that can be a useful tool in early identification of possible health risk factors among youth and children.
