Hingham Sports Team Wins Lunch For Going Green
The girls' lacrosse team received a calzone party from Crow Point Pizzeria for collecting the most compost.

The Hingham High School girls’ lacrosse team received a free lunch from Crow Point Pizzeria on Friday for collecting the most compost at a school lunch earlier this month.
The girls lacrosse team collected more compost than any other high school team this spring.
They collected materials like aluminum cans, plastic water bottles, banana peels and apple cores, according to HHS Assistant Principal Rick Swanson.

To determine the winner, Swanson weighed the trash and the compost. He also subtracted points for any recyclable material found in the trash barrel.
Alison Argiro, a senior on the lacrosse team said her teammates covered every area of the cafeteria to win, even going to different tables and reminding students to recycle.

“Some people don’t really care and would throw their whole lunch bag away, so we made sure to tell them to look in their bag and told them to put anything they had in the compost.” Argiro said.
Natalie Carey, a junior lacrosse player said the program helped build teamwork, and environmental awareness. She said they program teaches students to recycle inside and outside of school.
“They got into it,” Swanson said. “Some of them even carried the compost buckets around the cafeteria to remind kids. Some even put on plastic gloves and reached into the thrash. They were very aggressive.”
Swanson said he has ran the compost collecting contest each season on the school year. In the fall, the boys’ soccer team received a free Taco Bell lunch for winning, and in the winter, the girls’ and boys’ ice hockey team tied, each receiving lunch from Crow Point Pizzeria.
