Hull Man Charged in Hingham Break-ins

HINGHAM, MA – A Hull man was arrested Saturday after a resident called police about a man who had broken into his car in his driveway. An Officer found him inside another parked car across the street but he fled on foot when confronted. A police dog tracked him to another neighborhood and he was arrested after a brief struggle. The man faces 15 charges in connection with other car breaks overnight.

On Saturday, April 8, 2017, at 3:27 a.m. a resident of Bulow Road called 911 to report his car was just broken into in his driveway. The resident said the man was carrying a backpack and holding a flashlight and was now inside a parked car in another driveway. Officer Scott Miller, who was nearby, approached the man as he sat inside the car looking through the glove compartment holding a flashlight. A backpack was on the ground beside the car. The man initially followed commands to show his hands and step out. Once outside he ran away into the back yard. During a foot pursuit through backyards, over a fence and across Route 3A, Officers lost sight of him. Officers set up a perimeter while awaiting a K9.

K9 Officer Ryan Ross and K9 Pedy began a track and located a discarded multi-purpose folding tool on Langlee Rd. The K9 track continued to the rear porch of a home on Langlee Road where they found the man hiding between a chimney and the side of the house. He was holding an object in his hand and did not obey commands to drop the object. K9 Pedy made contact with his arm and, after a brief struggle, the man was taken into custody. The object he was holding was a folding knife. The man was treated at the scene by Hingham paramedics.

Officers allegedly found discarded items scattered on the rear porch which were identified as having been stolen from other unlocked cars on Bulow Road overnight. Inside the backpack were numerous items such as loose change, car phone chargers, sunglasses, fundraising candy bars along with an envelope of cash, and medication belonging to a Bulow Road resident. In a pocket in the backpack was a Suboxone strip and a bottle of Naloxone (“Narcan”) spray similar the ones carried by Officers.

Arrested was Maximillian B. Smith-Marder, 28, of Hull. He was charged with five counts of breaking and entering in nighttime for a felony, possession of burglarious instruments, two counts of resisting arrest, four counts of larceny under $250, two counts of disturbing the peace, and possession of Suboxone.

He was booked at the Hingham Police station and released after posting $200 cash bail. He will be arraigned on Monday, April 10, at Hingham District Court. He has not been charged in connection with the seven unlocked cars that were reported entered overnight on April 1 in Hingham. Those remain under investigation.
