Hull Man Charged with Possessing Explosive Device

HULL, MA — A man who reported a break-in at his home now faces charges for having an explosive device, police said.
Kevin Butler, 26, of Hull, was arrested and charged with possession of an explosive/destructive device, possession of anabolic steroids, and disturbing the peace, according to the Hull Police Department.
On July 19, at around noon, officers in Hull responded to a call for reported break-in and stolen vehicle on Nantasket Avenue. Bulter told police that a safe containing with cash and his car were stolen.

During the investigation, the car was recovered on Beach Avenue and police found what appeared to be an explosive device. The Hull Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad were called to the area. The device, a five-inch cylinder packed with what appeared to be an explosive powder, was determined to be safe. State police are now in possession of the device.
Butler is being held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned in Hingham District Court Wednesday morning.
