The James Library & Center for the Arts Presents Author Stephen Puleo Book Discussion
Speaking on popular title American Treasures
The James Library & Center for the Arts, Norwell’s historic community arts center and lending library, presents author Stephen Puleo speaking on his book American Treasures: The Secret Efforts to Save the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address on Friday, November 18, 7 pm at 24 West Street, Norwell. The discussion is sponsored by Carol C. Neely. Books will be available for purchase by Buttonwood Books and Toys.
Enjoy award-winning author Puleo’s engaging discussion, detailing exciting stories of freedom under fire—from the smuggling of the Declaration and Constitution out of Washington days before the British burned the capital in 1814, to their covert relocation during WWII—crafting a sweeping history of a nation united to preserve its democracy and the values embodied in its founding documents.
A prolific author, historian, teacher, public speaker, and communications professional, Stephen has six narrative nonfiction works on regional bestseller lists and beyond. His additional titles include The Caning: The Assault That Drove America to Civil War (2012), A City So Grand: The Rise of an American Metropolis, Boston 1850-1900 (2010), The Boston Italians: A Story of Pride, Perseverance and Paesani, from the Years of the Great Immigration to the Present Day (2007), Due to Enemy Action: The True World War II Story of the USS Eagle 56 (2005), and Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 (2003). With more than 450 public appearances on his resume, his showcase appearances include serving as keynote speaker at the Northeast Regional Association of the Social Studies; as a guest speaker for the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Massachusetts Superior Court; and as a panel participant with Italian-American and Jewish-American scholars entitled Italy and the Holocaust: The Calabria Connection, presented at UMass-Boston. He is also a former award-winning newspaper reporter and contributor of feature stories and book reviews to publications including American History magazine and The Boston Globe.

Puleo has taught history at Suffolk University in Boston, and also has developed and taught numerous writing workshops for high school and college students, as well as for adults who aspire to be writers. He and his wife, Kate, who live south of Boston, donate a portion of his book proceeds to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Tickets for American Treasures: The Secret Efforts to Save the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address are $18 adults and $10 for students, $20 at the door. Since 1874, The James Library has served the South Shore community as a warm gathering place. Housed in a landmark Victorian in historical Norwell Center, The James is dedicated to serving the community by providing high-quality programs, resources and materials through a concert hall, art gallery and the operation of a free lending library. As an independent, non-profit arts center we foster a mission for the creation, appreciation and enjoyment of the arts for residents of all ages on the South Shore, while preserving the historic character of our home.
