Man Arrested in Hingham for 4th OUI Tried to Use Brother's License as ID: Police

Police say Jose Correia attempted to use his brother's license as identification after being pulled over for drunken driving

HINGHAM, MA - A Brockton man attempted to use his brother’s license as identification after being pulled over for drunken driving in Hingham, court records say.

Jose Correia, 52, was arrested Saturday night and charged with his fourth drunken driving offense, operating to endanger, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating with a license suspended for an OUI, and using a false name. He was arraigned Monday in Hingham District Court.

On June 4 around 11:40 p.m., an Officer Terrance Low observed a red SUV traveling about 10 mph with the left turn signal on, according to a police report. After following the car, police say the car stopped in the road, resumed driving at 10 mph, and occasionally turned on a turn signal.

Correia was pulled over near the intersection of Cushing and Ward Streets. During the traffic stop, Correia allegedly used his brother’s license to identify himself. Police observed that Correia had a strong order of alcohol noting that, “while exiting the vehicle, Correia was extremely uncoordinated and stumbled while walking to the side of the road.”

During the field sobriety test, Correia allegedly had slurred speech and went through extreme mood swings ranging from cooperative to angry. Correia was taken into custody after failing the sobriety tests.

During the booking process, police learned that Correia used a license that was not his when his social security number didn’t match with the license. His proper license was discovered inside his wallet.

Correia’s previous OUI charges occurred in Avon in 2006, Dorchester in 1990, and Brockton in 1988. His license was suspended for eight years following a conviction for the Avon offense.
