The following is a letter from the Orlando family thanking the public for their recent support. On Jan. 14 Cpl. Christopher Orlando was one of 12 Marines involved in a helicopter collision off the coast of Oahu. After a five-day search, Orlando and the other Maines were declared dead.

Tuesday, the family returned to Hingham after attending a memorial service in Hawaii. As the family pass through town escorted by police, supporters lined the street in silence, holding American flags.

Following the United States Marine Corps Base Hawaii Memorial Service for the twelve Marines of Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, who died while conducting a training mission on January 14, 2016, we were deeply moved by the tremendous show of support upon our return to Massachusetts.

The overwhelming response of support from State Police, local police, fire departments, EMS, and military and veterans groups, along with the members of the public who lined the overpasses and emergency cutouts and were stationed at all the intersections, was very heartwarming and much appreciated.

Once we exited at Derby Street and entered into our hometown of Hingham, the show of support from our family, friends and community was beyond words. The people of all ages who lined the streets holding flags and signs of support in silence and respect for Christopher and us will be etched in our minds forever.

Most importantly, the show of patriotism and gratitude honored and continues to honor, Christopher, his fellow Marines, and all those who protect and serve the citizens of this country. The search and recovery efforts on the north shore of Hawaii continue despite difficult weather conditions. We pray for the recovery of each and every Marine of Pegasus 31 and Pegasus 32.

With all our heartfelt thanks,

Richard and Linda Orlando
