Rockland Man Was Intoxicated When He Crashed Into Pole In Hingham: Police

A Rockland man struck a pole while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, police said.

HINGHAM, MA – A Rockland man struck a pole while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, police said.

Kevin M. Sullivan, 54, was arrested Monday and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating under the influence of drugs, operating to endanger, carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, driving with an open container of alcohol, and a marked lanes violation. He was licensed to possess the firearm, according to the Hingham Police Department.

At about 11:12 a.m. Monday morning, officers responded to report of a car that struck a utility pole on Gardner Street. At the scene, police found a utility pole snapped near the top and a damaged 2010 Kia Optima nearby.

Witnesses told police that the car was weaving and speeding before the crash. They also said after the crash, the driver removed a handgun from his waist and put it in the trunk.

The driver of the Kia, identified as Sullivan, was not injured. Officers allegedly detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and he was very unsteady on his feet. Sullivan denied consuming alcohol, but admitted to taking Gabapentin, police said. He was taken into custody after failing a series of field sobriety

Officers found a loaded .40 caliber handgun in the trunk, a bottle of whiskey on the passenger floor and two pipes with marijuana residue in the center console.

Sullivan was booked and released on $500 bail. He was arraigned at Hingham District Court on July 18.
