Incumbent State Rep. Murphy Wins 4th Norfolk District Primary
The 10-term incumbent from Weymouth earned a victory over the Hingham Democratic town committee member Melissa Smith.

WEYMOUTH, MA —With more than 90 percent of the precincts reporting 10-term incumbent James Murphy was headed to a comfortable victory against challenger Dr. Melissa Smith in the Democratic 4th Norfolk district race for state representative Tuesday night.
The Weymouth resident picked up 72.2 percent of the vote in the district made up of primarily Weymouth precincts. He was first elected to the seat in 2000.
Smith, who grew up in Georgia before moving to Hingham in 2011, had 27.8 percent of the vote with nearly 93 percent of the precincts reporting as of midnight.

"The results weren't what we hoped, but I am proud to have been standing with so many incredibly brave, kind, thoughtful people this past year," Dr. Smith said in a statement. "When I started this campaign, I gave this quick speech about having known everyone who came to my launch since 2016. Since our worst nightmares came true. Since our world fell apart. Since the hate our country harbors came into full view. And I was proud then to start this journey with you and I've been prouder every day since.

"I'm beyond proud of what we've done, and I know we'll keep going," she added. "There's a lot more to do. Congratulations to Jamie Murphy, who has yet a long road ahead."
Murphy will face Republican Paul Rotondo, a small business owner in Weymouth.

Democratic Primary
- James Murphy -72.2 percent (6,093 votes)
- Melissa Smith -27.3 percent (2,344 votes)
Republican Primary
- Paul Rotondo -Uncontested
