Street Lights Will Be Added to Cushing Street

Tuesday evening, the Board Selectmen and Hingham Traffic Committee discussed adding two street lights to Cushing Street for safety reasons.

The Board Selectmen Meeting approved a decision to add two street lights to existing poles on Cushing Street.

Sgt. Steven Dearth of the Hingham Police Department spoke to the board on behalf of both the Police Department and the Hingham Traffic Committee and asked the selectmen to install two street lights in between 399 Cushing Street and 417 Cushing Street for safety reasons. Dearth explained that there have been 11 recorded accidents on Cushing Street, two of which were fatal. Themade the proposal to the Board as a result of residents voicing their concern over the safety of the road.

Of the 11 accidents, 10 of the involved vehicles were traveling northbound. The proposed streetlights would therefore be placed on two poles that already exist on the northbound side of the street. Aside from the cost of providing electricity to two additional lights in the area, there will be no cost to the town of Hingham for the installation of the lights. Sergeant Dearth expressed the Traffic Committee’s belief that this will have an immediate positive effect on the safety of the road.
