Every year in April, Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson Day, which commemorates the anniversary of Robinson's historic debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. This year, Cary Library joins in the celebration with a special exhibit of Jackie Robinson Memorabilia.
Items in the exhibit will include photographs, autographs, baseball cards, sports magazines, World Series pins, medals, coins, and a personal scrapbook made in 1955, the year the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Yankees to win the World Series. This special collection has been assembled by Lexington resident, Dr. Stephen Schlein.
Dr. Schlein met Jackie Robinson as a young child living in Brooklyn, and became a lifelong fan of both Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Dr. Schlein's collection has previously been exhibited at the Brooklyn Historical Society, the Museum for the City of New York, the Sports Museum of America (NYC), The JFK Library & Museum, and Fenway Park.
This special exhibit will be for one day only. Dr Schlein will be present to talk sports and give more information about the items in his collection.
