I-95 Lane Closures in Lexington Start This Weekend

Crews will perform work ahead of the demolition of a Route 2 bridge.

The following is from Mass. DOT:

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will implement overnight lane closures on I-95 between Exit 28 and Exit 30 from Sunday, August 17 through Thursday, August 21. The closures will be in effect from 8:00 PM each night to 5:00 AM the following morning. All lanes will reopen for travel by 5:00 AM each morning to accommodate rush hour traffic. The closures are necessary to allow the contractor to install shielding under the Route 2 east and westbound bridges in preparation for the start of Stage 1A demolition in September.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while traveling along the detour routes.

Route 2 carries approximately 67,000 vehicles per day. The bridges, built in 1960, are structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, and the vertical clearance for I-95 under the bridges is substandard. The Route 2/I-95 Bridge Replacement Project will address the bridges’ current structural deficiencies, upgrade their capacity, meet current seismic criteria, improve safety, protect the environment and reduce annual maintenance costs.
