Letter to the Editor: 'We Need to Change Our Mindset'

In a letter to the editor, Courtyard Place resident Lily Yan stated that Lexington is in need of a change in mindset.

Dear Mr. Lipovich,

My name is Lily Yan. I live at Courtyard Place in Lexington. In my opinion what needs to be changed about Lexington is our mindset.

As individuals, we learn from our past experience, good or bad; and from other people. We learn, adapt and become better individuals. As a community, we should do the same. Instead of raising people’s taxes each time the town needs additional funds, we should first find ways to save money by learning from other municipalities and listening to voices in our community.

Mr. Patrick Mehr, Chairman of Committee for Financial Responsibility in Lexington proposed 5 changes at http://lexvote.org/ : long-term operating and capital planning; classroom utilization improvement; compensation structural change for town employees; residential exemption, and change in assessment of large commercial properties.

I think the town and its various committees should evaluate Mr. Mehr’s proposals and implement the changes that can work for Lexington. Making changes can be very hard. We, as a community, should do the right things: change our mindset, encourage more proposals from and discussions among our residents, and find better solutions than simply raising property taxes.
