Lexington Baseball Lights Up Lowell

Game played under the lights is last regular-season game for the team

With a Middlesex League title under its belt and a high seed going into the playoffs, the Lexington High School baseball team's inter-division game against Lowell on Friday night did not count for much in terms of the standings.

But that didn't stop the team from giving its all in front of a rowdy home crowd in what was its final regular season game, beating Lowell 6-0.

After three scoreless innings, Lexington opened up the floodgates in the fourth, with doubles from juniors Ben Ruxin and Demi Monovoukas, followed by a two-run homer from junior Charlie Guthrie.

It took three runs and two additional players reaching base in the fourth inning before Lowell's coach changed pitchers, but it did not turn out to be a tactic that silenced Lexington's bats.

Lexington pitcher Will Marcal took his turn at bat, hitting a two-RBI double, to take a 5-0 lead with one out. Monovoukas batted in one additional run off a single before Lowell managed to strike out one more batter to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Marcal had a strong performance in the top of the fifth inning, striking out two batters and allowing one fielded out and no batters to reach base. There were very few Lowell runners stranded in the game, and Marcal had seven strikeouts through five innings.

Lexington's squad will be losing six senior, but the junior powerhouses stand to make a lot of noise in the Middlesex League and in inter-league play, as seniors next year.
