Lexington Boys' Soccer Team Ties Winchester

Referees hand out three yellow cards.

Three yellow cards were handed out on Tuesday afternoon during Lexington High School's boys' soccer game against Winchester High School at Lincoln Field, where the teams tied 2-2.

The first was given to a Winchester player in the first half when he grabbed a Lexington player's jersey. The second was given to a Lexington player shortly after when he put his knee out and tripped a Winchester player. The final yellow card was given to a Lexington player in the second half with just minutes left in the game.

"The calls were okay," Lexington coach Dan Rudolph said. "I forget one. The other one was, I thought it was a pretty reasonable decision."

Along with the yellow cards thrown out, four goals were kicked in.

Winchester's senior captain Ryan Connolly scored the game's first goal on Lexington's goalkeeper Dean Magauran 10 minutes into the game.

Three minutes later, Lexington junior Dastan Pakyari passed the ball to junior Alex Herbert who scored the Minutemen's first goal from the left side of the goalie box. Herbert beat a defender and Winchester's junior goalkeeper Andrew Shediac, tying the game at 1-1.

At the 15-minute mark, Herbert scored Lexington's second goal when he ran the ball past Shediac and shot the ball into the right side of the net, putting the Minutemen up 2-1.

Winchester came back and scored its second goal and the game's final goal with six minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Zachary Samson passed to Connolly, who shot on Magauran from the right side.

Lexington almost made it 3-2 with two minutes left in the first half when Kyle Petersson drilled a shot on net, but the ball hit the top of the right post.

"Not a bad performance," Rudolph said. "Winchester is an athletic team and I thought we matched them and we created a couple goals … and in the end it was maybe a fair result.

"I think we had the better of the chances, but it was a fair result."

Magauran had great saves throughout the game. In the first five minutes of play, he made a nice running stop when a Winchester player was just about to shoot the ball.

In the second half, he made a tumbling save in the goalie box against Winchester senior Benjamin Davis. In the 20th minute he jumped and caught a high ball. Shortly after, he saved corner kicks – twice. He dove to save a kick, the ball fumbled out of his hands, and he dove again to scoop it up.

"Dean (Magauran) did a good job," coach said. "[The] Goalkeeper's performance was good."

Lexington's next game is at Watertown High School on Thursday.
