Lexington Gaels Come Back for 7-5 Win Over Wellesley

Win is the team's second in 14A MiddleEssex softball league action.

The Lexington Gaels posted a 7-5 win over the Wellesley Raiders in 14A MiddeEssex softball league action Tuesday night at Lexington's Lincoln Field.

Lexington, leading 5-2 by the top of the fifth, improved to a 2-7-2 record with the win, while Wellesley dropped to 2-9-1.

Wellesley got on the scoreboard early, when in the top of the first inning, Annie Leone scored from third base off Katherine Cabonaro's single with only one out. Maria Tashslan scored the second run of the inning from third base off a wild pitch by Lexington's Maddie Orcutt, making it 2-0 Raiders.

In the top of the second, Wellesley's Emma Megan scored the third run from third base off of Caroline Kelly's blast into right field. Before Megan's run, she had an impressive hit herself past Lexington's shortstop, and followed that by stealing second and third bases.

The game was 5-2 at the top of the fifth, but in the bottom of the inning Lexington really showed their game against Wellesley pitcher Sarah Goss.

There were two outs after the third batter swung, while Lexington's Fiona Dugan made it to second. Next up, Amanda Charlton notched a double, advancing Dugan to third.

A Fiona Fitzgerald single brought Dugan and Charlton home, narrowing Wellesley's lead to 5-4. Fitzgerald scored next, after stealing second and then reaching third — by Kelly's fumble — when Orcutt singled into right field and Wellesley's Leone held the ball for too long.

With the game tied at 5-5, Mia Foley – Lexington's eighth batter up against Goss — hit deep into center field and scored Julia Morison (courtesy runner for Orcutt) and Catherine Sillari, giving Lexington a 7-5 advantage.

Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh inning, and Lexington got the win.
