Lexington High Baseball Continues Undefeated Streak

Will Marcal allows just two hits as Minutemen notch fifth win against Reading.

The still-undefeated Lexington High School baseball team earned its fifth win of the season Thursday afternoon, shutting out Reading Memorial High School, 4-0.

Lexington senior pitcher Will Marcal allowed just two hits on the afternoon.

“He had a fantastic night,” said LHS coach Tom O’Grady.

Besides Marcal, Lexington’s batters had a solid game, as well, against the Rockets.

In the bottom of the first, against Reading pitcher and senior tri-captain Rob McHugh, LHS senior Scoop Ruxin scored Lexington’s first run from second base when Chris Shaw doubled deep into center field.

Lexington’s three other runs came in the bottom of the fourth, when Connor Murray walked to force in Lexington’s second run and senior Demetri Monovoukas had a double to right field to put runners on second and third.

Senior Matt Sharma doubled to knock in Monovoukas and Murray, and then Nick Murray’s single up middle scored Sharma for Lexington’s fourth run.

Reading’s first base hit of the game didn’t come until the top of the fifth inning, when senior tri-captain Jeff Covitz banged a triple to right field. But the Rockets’ excitement was short-lived, as Marcal fanned junior outfielder Mark Sheehan, sophomore outfielder Scott Tully and senior second baseman/outfielder Mike Grassi.

In the top of the sixth, junior catcher Paul Andrick smacked a single to right field for Reading’s second hit, but once again the Rockets weren’t able to capitalize. McHugh, senior tri-captain second baseman/shortstop Tom Crowley and senior third baseman Chris Welch, all fumbled at the harsh pitches of Marcal and struck out.

Reading almost got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, when junior third baseman Mac Cook hit a grounder to first base, but Lexington’s first baseman dove for the stop and threw in time to Marcal, who tagged the first base plate.

Lexington plays again on Saturday, in a makeup game with Watertown High School. Their original contest was postponed on Wednesday.
