Lexington High School Wins WGBH's 'High School Quiz Show'

The Minutemen have won back-to-back titles.

LEXINGTON, MA – Lexington High School took first place in WGBH's "High School Quiz Show" on Saturday, winning its second championship in as many years. The Minutemen also bested Nashua South High School in New Hampshire to win the Governor's Cup Challenge, a face-off between the Massachusetts and New Hampshire champions.

The team was coached by social studies teacher Bill Cole and chemistry teacher Kari Darling. It beat Newton North High School in final categories named after songs by the late singer-songwriter Prince.

"Congratulations to High School Quiz Show two-time champions, Lexington High School," WGBH President and CEO Jon Abbott said in a statement. "We’re proud that WGBH continues to provide a platform for Massachusetts students to shine, and show a new generation of public media fans just how much fun increasing your knowledge can be."

Hosted by Boston radio and television personality Billy Costa, WGBH’s High School Quiz Show’s eighth season kicked off last November with the “Super Sunday” qualifying event, where 110 Massachusetts high schools took an identical oral quiz at WGBH Studios. Sixteen schools advanced to the televised weekly tournament.

This Lexington victory is the second time High School Quiz Show has had back-to-back champions. Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School also won consecutive championships in Season 2 and Season 3 of the competition.
