Lexington Residents Riding in 33rd Pan-Massachusetts Challenge

Seventy-five Lexington residents are scheduled to ride in August's Pan-Mass Challenge.

When the 33rd Pan-Massachusetts Challenge takes place Aug. 4 and 5, there will be 75 Lexington residents taking part.

About 5,500 cyclists will take part in the 33rd annual event, which is known as the "nation’s pioneer charity bike-a-thon that raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country," according to a press release from Pan-Mass challenge.

The goal of this year's ride is to raise $36 million to support cancer research in adult and pediatric cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.

Riders in the Pan-Mass Challenge range from age 13-88 and have a variety of athletic training to their experience. According to a press release, more than 300 riders are cancer survivors of current patients themselves.

“The PMC is the gold standard of athletic fundraising events,” says Billy Starr, Pan-Massachusetts Challenge founder and executive director, in the press release. “PMCers are as committed to raising money for cancer research as they are to pedaling the miles. PMC cyclists are all heart and soul.”
